Seasonal Allergies – Hydration is Your Hero!

One of the best things you can do to stave off and help relieve those seasonal allergies is to stay hydrated.

Those itchy eyes, the runny nose and sneezing that make us miserable are due to a natural product of our endocrine system. Histamine is actually our friend and is there to help defend against and get rid of pollutants, viruses, bacteria and pollen. However, dehydration can throw histamine out of balance and cause elevated levels. As a neurotransmitter, the primary role of histamine is to regulate thirst and the body’s water supply. When dehydrated, histamine production kicks in to preserve the water remaining in the body. It plays a role in the contractions of bronchial muscles and tries to restrict water loss by constricting the bronchioles which can lead to asthmatic symptoms. Increased histamines, out of control and trying to push out perceived threats, make us miserable with the sniffles, watering, sneezing and itchiness.

By staying well hydrated, you can help keep histamine production in check and flush out the irritants in your system. Proper hydration helps to thin mucus in the nasal passages and encourage sinus drainage. Sinus congestion leads to dry mouth and going for extended periods without protective saliva increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, another great reason to reach for more water.

Increasing the amount of water you drink is a big part of minimizing seasonal allergies. Adding a packet of re:iimmune to that glass of water adds balancing electrolytes which help the body retain water. It also contains the amino acid L-Glutamine which aids in hydration by assisting cells to absorb water quicker and helps to rebuild healthy tissue in your intestinal wall. Avoiding caffeine and alcohol and other known diuretics is also a good idea. How much water should you drink? Eight glasses a day is the standard response but another way of thinking of it is based on your body weight. Divide your weight in half and that will give you the number of ounces of water you should be drinking each day to maintain proper hydration.

re:iimmune – Get Well Make Well Campaign

Through the Get Well Make Well program, a serving of re:iimmune will be donated for every box purchased to organizations who work daily to improve the health of under-served populations and catastrophe relief. Your purchase of re:immune helps you to “get well” and simultaneously helps “make well” the life of another. To date Get Well Make Well has enabled us to donate over 100,000 servings world-wide through Convoy of Hope.

Every year a half million children under the age of 5 die from dehydration and millions more suffer from poor intestinal health and malnutrition. Lack of clean water sources lead to an increase of diarrheal diseases which cause severe dehydration, leaving the body in a depleted state and requiring more than just plain old H2O to rehydrate efficiently.

Dr. Kerri Miller, the creator and founder of Make People Better spent time volunteering as a medical aid in Nicaragua where she witnessed lethal dehydration up close and inspired her to develop re:iimmune and eventually the Get Well Make Well campaign. She worked with the Nicaraguan government to introduce the World Health Organization’s protocol and implement the use of the oral rehydration solution with zinc for immune support. A prebiotic and probiotic complex promote the growth of beneficial bacteria which help destroy bad bacteria and support the immune system, while L-glutamine assists in tissue repair and ginger reduces nausea. By first restoring hydration and then offering support to the immune system, re:iimmune proved helpful to people facing terrible intestinal diseases such as cholera and dysentery.

Our Get Well Make Well campaign gives you the opportunity to help people a world away. For each box of re:iimmune sold, one potentially lifesaving serving is donated to organizations who work daily to improve the health of underserved populations and disaster relief. If you would like to get involved and use re:iimmune in your global health organization please follow this link to obtain more information.

Potassium and It’s Many Functions in the Human Body

Wanna hear a joke about potassium?

K.

If this one doesn’t have you laughing, think back to chemistry class and the periodic table of elements. While the symbol for potassium is a “K”, it is not the same as vitamin K. Each are essential micronutrients but potassium is not a vitamin, it’s a mineral that is used for different functions in our bodies than vitamin K. Potassium is vital for good health and today we’ve got some great reasons you should make sure you’re getting enough in your diet and why we included the mineral in re:iimmune!

Image via periodictable.com

While it is classified as a mineral, it’s also an electrolyte. These conduct electrical impulses and are important for a range of essential functions of the body including regulating blood pressure, muscle contractions, digestion and heart rhythm. It’s not produced by the body so we must be sure to include potassium rich foods in our diet such as fruits like kiwi, bananas, apricots and pineapple and vegetables like leafy greens, potatoes and carrots. The mineral can also be found in lean meats, beans, nuts and whole grains.

There are negative effects associated with too much potassium (hyperkalemia) including upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, mental confusion and tingling sensations in the extremities. Some drugs can cause levels to rises such as ACE-inhibitors, blood thinning agents like heparin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A severe deficiency in potassium (hypokalemia) is often associated with use of antibiotics such as penicillin, magnesium deficiency, kidney disease and overusing diuretics.

Most potassium ions are stored in the muscle cells. Required for the regular contraction and relaxation of muscles, it also helps keep our reflexes sharp as it stimulates the neural connectivity between the muscles and the brain. If your levels are too low, it can cause muscle cramps, spasms and weakness. Studies also show that consuming foods that have high levels promote higher mineral density in bones as it assists the body in retaining and preserving calcium.
It also assists in metabolism, helping to process nutrients like fats and carbohydrates and the synthesis of proteins positively affecting tissue regeneration and cell growth. Lack of the mineral weakens the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and can lead to abdominal pain, constipation and bloating. This is why the re:iimmune formula includes 11% of the daily value of potassium. Along with a prebiotic and probiotics for promoting healthy intestinal bacteria and L-Glutamine for repairing intestinal tissue, potassium helps to support intestinal health and optimal function!

Gut Health – Reset Your System!

Our gut health impacts nearly every other part of our bodies. When it’s functionality is disrupted due to poor diet, illness, bacteria, stress, etc. it can really take a toll on our system and quality of life. Here are a few tips to get your gut health back on track!

Remove Toxins From Your Diet

There are many things we consume that take a serious toll on our gut health. Limiting or completely eliminating the following can make a huge difference when you are struggling with intestinal issues.

  • Alcohol
  • Grains
  • Processed Foods
  • Refined Sugars

It’s also a good idea stay clear of conventionally raised meats. Due to what the animals are fed, their meat tends to be higher in omega-6 oils which raises risk of inflammatory disease. Opt for pastured or grass fed meat.

Include Fermented Foods and Bone Broth

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, yogurt and kefir are probiotic rich foods which repopulate the intestines with helpful bacteria necessary for optimal gut health. Bone broth has also been found to have fantastic healing properties for our bodies. Just be aware that store bought, boxed or canned “stock” and “broth” are typically created with lab produced flavorings. So if you want real benefits, make your own stock at home!

De-Stress

We know it’s hard sometimes with busy lifestyles and the worries of the world but taking time to relax is crucial for good gut health. The brain and the gut have a symbiotic relationship and their health impacts one another. Soothing the worries of the mind can have a positive effect on gut health and in turn, taking care of your digestive system has a profound impact on your mindset and mood. Meditation, exercise, yoga, reconnecting with nature and spending quality time with loved ones are some of the ways to reduce the stress in your life.

Avoid Antibiotics Unless Absolutely Necessary

The opposite of probiotics, antibiotics are meant to kill off bacteria. However they don’t discern between good bacteria and bad, killing off all gut flora. If it is absolutely necessary for you to take an antibiotic, then you definitely want to utilize these tips to reset your system!

Reach for the re:iimmune

Developed to provide adequate hydration and promote healthy intestinal bacteria, re:iimmune contains a multi-strain probiotic blend along with a prebiotic which acts as a food source for the probiotics. This aids in restoring beneficial gut flora and offers protection to your digestive system. The amino acid L-Glutamine aids in hydration by assisting cells to absorb water quicker and helps to rebuild healthy tissue in your intestinal wall. All of which helps to get your gut health in optimum working order, thereby impacting your overall well being and vitality!

Melinda Lund, Dietitian

Melinda Lund MS, RD

Dietitian, Center for Health Improvement/Outpatient Diabetes Services

It’s so wonderful to hear from the doctors, nurses and dietitians like Melinda who are witnessing the benefits of re:iimmune in their patients. The creation of our product was born from a desire to help folks who are recovering from a variety of illnesses to get better in a better and more convenient way. From l-glutamine to repair intestinal tissue, probiotics to help feed healthy gut bacteria to ginger to ease the discomfort of nausea all in one product, we’re proud to hear that re:iimmune is helping folks on the road to recovery!

“Professionally I’d like to focus on our oncology population. Even though I have recommended this product to other patients (including pre/post bariatric surgery), it’s our oncology patients I feel that are some of our most vulnerable.  The use of this product just within that group is multi-fold. We have the patients who are going through chemo treatment that may have higher risk than usual ER/UC utilization for dehydration after treatment (days 2-4 post chemo) due to treatment side effects (vomiting) and/or lack of intake. We also have patients who lose significant amount of weight or have head and neck cancer that, with treatment, are no longer to eat by mouth. In both cases, a tube feeding of some sort is warranted which means surgery and the risks/side effects that accompany the procedure.

re:iimmune is a product that is fantastic to recommend in all of these scenarios.  Both pre-surgery on through post-surgery recovery and again just prior to and through post chemo treatment.  The bonus ingredient from my perspective is the ginger!  For our oncology patients that experience nausea (slight to extreme), I always recommend ginger in some form to them. This being in the re:iimmune, to me, makes so much sense and is the perfect place to “house it”.  The probiotics already added in are also very important to me for the patients.  Chemo/radiation treatment are very hard on the gut balance, and I typically was recommending a probiotic supplement for those patients all of the time already.  Again, having this already in the formula is amazing.  One drink, everything that they need.  Many of them can be overwhelmed with all of the medications they are asked to take during treatment, so to help them limit added pills to swallow makes life much easier for them…and in drinkable form.

I’ve also had this product on hand to recommend to our ALS patients – again, many with declining oral intake, weight loss, PEG tube surgeries…an excellent supplement for them! As I mentioned, we have such a vast variety of patient populations here where I can see re:iimmune being beneficial…so I really am a firm believer in this product and it’s quality!”

American consumers are literally flooded with gimmicky and expensive variations on H2O: concoctions of sugar, artificial flavors and unsubstantiated ingredients that can themselves pose a challenge to our health. At the same time, poor hydration and insufficient intestinal microflora can endanger patient recovery and lead to hospital readmissions and poor outcomes. Dr. Kerri Miller developed re:iimmune to address those issues and to help people get better, better! A Johns Hopkins and Harvard educated nurse practitioner, Dr. Miller developed a simple solution; make the water you drink more efficient during illness recovery!

With her oral Hydrobiotic technology, she created a solution that gives water more power to hydrate while supercharging the body’s natural defense system.

We want to hear from you and share your story to encourage others to give re:iimmune a try and help more people who are on the road to recovery or looking to maintain a healthy gut and stay properly hydrated. What People Say About re:iimmune

The change of the year has us thinking about how changing your routine or adding something new into your life can be unsettling or invigorating or perhaps a little bit of both. Even something small, like adding re:iimmune into your routine to better improve your gut health and stay hydrated can seem like a huge commitment. You might be thinking “I’ve got a thousand things to do in a day. What? Now I’ve gotta remember to drink this too?” Don’t laugh! You know what we mean. All of us are creatures of habit but it takes some of us a lot of time, effort, reminders and information to fall INTO those habits. So today we thought we’d give you some ideas on how to kickstart the habit of making re:iimmune part of your day and inspiration from some of our customers on why you should!

What People Are Saying

“Best. Product. Ever. My wife and I are both very health aware and try to make good choices. re:iimmune® does exactly what it says it will do – help you rehydrate and recover. How and why? It is the product of solid research. Simply put, it really does “make people better.” Dale Moore

“As a Registered Dietitian I am always on the lookout for superior nutrition products that are supported by evidence-based medicine, and have found a keeper in re:iimmune.  I often find myself becoming dehydrated throughout my busy workday, when things become so hectic it’s easy to forget to drink or eat anything! It’s a snap to mix up some re:iimmune and instantly feel recharged- and it tastes great, too, not like some other supplements that contain artificial sweeteners and a chemical-laden aftertaste. The nutritionist in me also likes fact that there aren’t extra calories from added sugars- it’s really just good, simple, nutrition- and can be enjoyed by diabetics or others who are controlling their carbohydrate intake.  Knowing that re:iimmune contains probiotics and L-glutamine, both proven to support intestinal health, makes me feel even better about drinking it and recommending it to patients, especially those on low-fiber diets or with gastrointestinal disease. re:iimmune contains just the right ingredients whether you’re recovering from an illness or just trying to stay healthy! And did I mention it tastes great?!” Stephanie B.

“I have been a daily user of Emergen-C and was recently introduced to re:iimmune®, my current job requires weekly travel with extended stays in hotels and use of rental cars and public transportation, my body tends to weaken / breakdown with the air travel and poor diet. With re:iimmune’s® keen ability to rehydrate my system it allows me to stay focused and maintain my energy level.” Mike Smith

re:iimmune® has been helping me since I was diagnosed with cancer. I drink one packet the day before and one the day of chemotherapy. I have not needed any additional medication for nausea. I am so thankful for this product.” Ladonna Appelbaum

“I have suffered from IBS since I was a teenager, I know how important “gut health” is so when I heard about re:iimmune I knew I had to try it.  I have used it for a couple years and I love it.  Every morning I drink a full glass of it, so it helps rehydrate me and the probiotics keep my gut in check. Since starting on re:iimmune I have not had any IBS issues, even in situations that would otherwise cause a flare up. I also have shared the product on numerous occasions with my elderly parents when they have had the flu and or have to take antibiotics and it has helped them recover faster and like me, my Dad thinks the salty flavor is great.  So, why re:iimmune…because it is all about taking care of yourself, being healthier, and living an active life style with NO side effects.”  Paula T.

“As a hairstylist and make-up artist, I spend most of my days on my feet rushing around, and I rarely have a chance to even slow down long enough to take a drink of water or eat a full meal. I love my job, and I am passionate about creating art with my clients, but the toll it takes on my body is unavoidable. Days when I’m feeling especially run down, dehydrated and fatigued, one glass of re:iimmune will put me right back on my A game. When my husband has clients in town, his job is to entertain them, so after a long day of work when the only thing my body wants me to do is relax and recuperate, re:iimmune gives me the refreshment and stamina to socialize without winding up sick the next day!” Vivian Conway

“I was first introduced to re:iimmune by a friend, when I was feeling under the weather one day. Back in 2009 I had gastric bypass (weight loss) surgery. I have kept off about 80 pounds of that weight loss. One thing that weight loss surgery patients must be very attune to, is their hydration levels. Some who have had this type of surgery can dehydrate faster than the average person, and it can be much more dangerous, sometimes even sending people to the hospital for days of re-hydration I.V.’s. Living in the great state of Texas where summer temperatures easily reach over a hundred degrees for several days in a row, I must stay acutely aware of my water intake. Any time I feel like I’m not quite there with my hydration, or I’m feeling tired, I just drink a re:iimmune and in about 30 minutes, I feel completely refreshed and recharged.  I feel so glad that I was made aware of this wonderful product and I always keep a box on hand. I’ve recommended it to friends as well!  While I may not be the type of consumer using this product for a more serious medical issue, I think it’s good to get the word out that this is extremely useful for the “average” consumer; i.e., after having been out in the heat all day, etc.  Everybody needs re:iimmune.

Thanks for creating this great product!”  Angie M.

Making re:iimmune Part of YOUR Day

So as you can see, people have so many good reasons to add our hydrobiotic recovery formula into their routine! Now how do you go about turning that into a habit? We found this awesome article on lifehack.org “18 Tricks to Make New Habits Stick” by Scott H. Young. We’ll share a few of his recommendations below but then we highly recommend you click on the link above to read it in it’s entirety because his suggestions are spot on!

Commit to Thirty Days –  Young says, “Three to four weeks is all the time you need to make a habit automatic. If you can make it through the initial conditioning phase, it becomes much easier to sustain. A month is a good block of time to commit to a change since it easily fits in your calendar.”

Stay Consistent – With any habit you are trying to form you need to play upon your regular routine. So for something like adding re:iimmune into your routine, find a certain time of day that you can easily see yourself mixing and drinking it. Perhaps it works best for you to mix it up in the morning and drink it in the car on the way to work. Or maybe it’s better for you to incorporate it during lunch. As Young says, “When cues like time of day, place and circumstances are the same in each case it is easier to stick.”
Remind Yourself –  Young suggests, “Around two weeks into your commitment it can be easy to forget. Place reminders to execute your habit each day or you might miss a few days. If you miss time it defeats the purpose of setting a habit to begin with.”

Eczema – Natural Remedies and Link to Gut Health

Eczema is a chronic and irritating problem for many people. It’s a type of inflammation of the skin called dermatitis that causes redness, scaling, swelling, itching and bleeding. An estimated 35 million Americans suffer from one form or another of the condition. Seventy percent of cases develop in children prior to age five and over half of infants who have eczema will continue to have symptoms into adulthood. There are three forms; atopic, contact and seborrhoic dermatitis. The latter, seborrhoic dermatitis is also known as cradle crap or dandruff, causing dry or oily scaling of the scalp. Contact dermatitis is the result of contact with different types of allergens and irritants found in creams, foods, plants and some metals. Atopic dermatitis is the result of allergies like hay fever and typically makes itself known at an early age on the face, scalp, neck, inside elbows and behind the knees.

There are several triggers of eczema, including what’s happening in the digestive system. Infants who are bottle fed are more likely to develop eczema as they are not getting enough essential fatty acids that they would receive from breast milk. Other people have trouble converting linoleic acid to anti-inflammatory hormone-like substances called prostaglandins. Much research is now being done on the connection between gut health, emotions and skin. Emotional stress results in a depletion of digestive enzymes and digestive and skin issues emerge. Or in cases of “leaky gut syndrome” the intestines become porous allowing bits of undigested food to enter the bloodstream which can cause allergic reactions. Candida, a form of yeast is also linked to skin irritations such as eczema.

So what to do if you are suffering from a form of eczema? We’ve got some suggestions for you including things to avoid and foods to eat. . .

Re:iimmune

Hydration is extremely important when it comes to maintaining a healthy intestinal tract. The L-Glutamine in our intestinal support formula works to rebuild the delicate tissue of the intestinal lining, while ginger aids in decreasing inflammation and zinc which benefits the skin’s ability to heal. re:iimmune also combines a variety of probiotic strains as well as one essential prebiotic which acts as food for the probiotics to thrive. These probiotics allow the body to produce the beneficial bacteria your digestive system needs to function properly.

Get the right nutrients in your diet

A diet rich in essential fatty acids, zinc, Vitamins A and B6, and beta-carotene is key. Some good choices are bananas, bone broths, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green onions, buckwheat, rice milk and mung beans.
